Your 2nd brain consists of about 500 million neurons & is in your gut, also called the enteric nervous system. For the 1st brain between your ears to operate properly, the 2nd brain, located from the esophagus to the stomach, & then to the small & large intestine area, must function well.

Moving more helps stimulate your intestines to contract and move that poop along. Set a regular exercise schedule to keep your gut active.
Step #3 — Add fiber
Aim for at least 40 grams of fiber each and every day. This can be both soluble and insoluble fiber. It will help to bulk up your fecal matter and keep it moving smoothly through your intestines. Good fibers to add to your diet include berries, oatmeal, lentils and green veggies.
Step #4 — Kick the bad stuff
Certain foods can slow down your colon and leave you at higher risk of constipation. These include:
• Processed foods • Foods high in sugar • Caffeine • Alcohol • Dairy
Step #5 — Supplement

If you dine out, be aware that sugar may be mixed with your food to enhance the taste. In Oklahoma, restaurants usually add a cup of sugar to every large batch of coleslaw they make for multiple patrons. Ask the waiter if there is sugar in your coleslaw before you order it.
Sugar & sugar substitutes are bad food additives that build up in your fat cells, keeps you looking like Mr. or Mrs. Santa Claus, & can contribute to destroying your brain between your ears as well as messing up the 2nd brain in your gut. .

The easiest way to strengthen your brain & prevent cognitive decline is to avoid contact with everything that harms your brain.
Were you aware that stress can cause a massive shrinkage to the memory center of your brain?
Therefore avoid people or situations that bring stress into your life. . However, not always is that successful, according to a television report, on February 8, 2019, about a man & wife, both lawyers, who tried to kick their hippie 30ish son out of their home for refusing to get a job. The lazy son then increased their stress by suing his parents for giving birth to him, without first getting his permission.
Inflammation in the body also harms your brain & weakens your immune system.
Gluten in bread & grain products like cookies & cereals causes inflammation,which allows all types of diseases to thrive.
Sugar & sugar substitutes also cause inflammation. Besides damaging your brain, sugar elevates your blood sugar, gives you a diabetes risk & can cause heart disease. Added sugars (including artificial sugars like high fructose corn syrup) in fruit drinks, sodas, desserts etc. will shorten your lifespan & likely lead to premature dementia.
Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water every day. (If you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces of water daily.) Every time you feel thirsty, you are dehydrated, Every time you are dehydrated, your brain shrinks permanently. To prevent brain shrinkage, always drink water even when you’re not thirsty. Columbo Didn’t Protect His Brain from Dementia
From 1968 to 2003, actor Peter Falk’s TV detective character, Columbo, was famous for looking befuddled & forgetful & then, suddenly, recalling,”just one more thing.” Neither his short height of 5'6” nor glass eye (cancer at age 3) prevented him from stardom.
Around 2007, Peter Falk became permanently befuddled & forgetful as he battled Alzheimer’s disease until 2011. Perhaps, if Falk had less stress in his life, avoided sugar, ate Vitamin K-rich vegetables & choline-rich eggs & steak, took B-Complex vitamins etc., a 91-year-old Columbo might be on TV, today, solving crimes from a wheelchair while living in a nursing home.
Falk rapidly slipped into dementia immediately after a series of dental operations about age 79. Likely, the operations allowed mouth bacteria into Falk's bloodstream from where bacterial toxins entered the brain, triggering Alzheimer's. If you plan to have extensive dental work done & you're over 60, I'd advise you to ask the dentist for a prescription for antibiotics both before & after each procedure.
NOTE: Choline is an essential nutrient that is the precursor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is involved in many functions including memory & muscle control. According to Al Sears M.D., a Florida doctor, like many nutrients, your supply of choline drops as you age, If you don’t replace it with supplements, you’re on the fast-track to mental decline. Although I’m not on the fast-track but am on the slow-track to mental decline, I've recently started taking a daily 500mg Choline supplement. I’ll report on the results of taking Choline if I feel any difference in the future that I attribute to it.

The first National Football League (NFL) player to seek help from Daniel G. Amen M.D. was 54-year-old former college Hall of Fame running back, Anthony Davis, who after testing, was shown to have the brain of someone 85-years old. That’s not good. Even an 85-year-old doesn’t want the brain of the average 85-year old. I’m 86, nearly 87, & I don’t want one, either.
Dr. Amen’s 1st brain study on 30 former NFL players was published in 2011, including a battery of cognitive tests & SPECT imaging measuring cerebral blood flow.

If you read the sports pages of newspapers, magazines, listen to sports shows on the radio or see sports commentary on television, you have heard about how just a few concussions have impaired the brains, especially the memory, of National Football League (NFL) & college football players.
. Tens of millions of dollars have been allocated to compensate former NFL players with brain damage, mostly from concussions caused by helmet-to-helmet blows. Until now, the media acted like brain trauma was a one-way-street to the babbling-idiot institution, housing grown men with childlike minds.
Brain damage from trauma greatly interests me, since I’ve lived through at least four (4) severe concussions.
At age 18, foolishly sparring with an experienced 185-pound heavyweight wearing 16-ounce (well-padded) gloves, my friend, Bill hit a 155-pound me on the jaw with a right cross that knocked me through the ring ropes onto wrestling mats piled on the floor, a few feet from the boxing ring. I was KO’d for maybe 45-seconds & had a pounding headache for 3 days
. I avoided boxing after that, but did okay in Karate tournaments that I entered a few years later. At age 20, I was sitting in the right back seat of a moving Ford Model A convertible, at college, when a classmate sharply turned the corner, left, at about 35 mph. The Model A was not built to turn corners sharply at that speed, so it flipped over & airborne-me onto the busy street like a pea flipped ten feet with a spoon.
I was ko’d when I hit the street, but spectators tell me that I was run over by a car (that never stopped) & that I crawled toward the curb, hit my head on the
curb & was revived a few minutes later with no injuries except road burns on my hands. Luck was with me.
Believing the fake news from the National Football League (NFL) that a couple of concussions led players down the path to senility, I expected to become a babbling idiot in a short time after my 4th concussion. Fortunately, by serendipity, I was doing everything right in my life to reverse brain damage from trauma. I’d rather be lucky than smart any day.

I believe that the average football player or other competitive athlete (e.g. boxer, martial artist etc.) may have had a hundred or more mini-concussions in practices & competitions when they were teenagers & collegiate athletes & never realized it.
Because the NFL has deep pockets, they are being given 100% of the responsibility for football players’ dementia. Logically, I doubt if the NFL concussions contributed to more than 50% of the brain damage suffered by most NFL veterans who were blocked or tackled.
It was probably cheaper for the NFL to settle out-of-court, than to battle in the court system for the next 10 years.
Whether or not you’ve had concussions in the past, you’d do well to follow Dr. Amen’s 7 healing protocols for good health in your future.
NOTE: Whereas Dr. Amen lists vitamin B6 & B12 & folate among “7. NOTE: Last Thursday, I went to Hillcrest Medical Center’s emergency room with a right wrist that had a pain level of 8 on a scale of 10.
One doctor said (from the X-ray) that I had a broken bone in the swollen wrist. A 2nd doctor, an orthopedic surgeon said that my old ligaments has snapped or stretched (from old age), allowing 2 bones to float, pinching nerves in the wrist that paralyzed the hand.
In short, I spent 5 days in the hospital & will spend the next 30 days or so in an assisted living home until the swelling subsides in a week or so. Then the orthopedic surgeon will see me, set a time to operate & then operate on my right wrist to repair the damage.
Until the operation is healed, the docs want me housed in the assisted living place. After that, I’ll be permanently at home.
About 22 extra newsletters were written by me in anticipation of a potential health problem, so you should receive them on an irregular basis until at least mid-April 2019. I am sending this to you from home.The assisted living home (The Villages of Southern Hills in Tulsa, a well-managed establishment) allows me to return home 4-hours a day if I have transportation. In statistics class you learn that the Dependent Variable is the end result of the actions of Independent Variables.
If your desire in life is to have a healthy brain, free of dementia, your Dependent Variable could be to protect your brain from the bad stuff (e.g. toxic chemicals, inflammation) & fortify it with Independent Variables like an organic, toxin-free non-GMO, non-junk food diet, plenty of exercise, water & any other possible ways to retain a youthful, healthy brain.
One fascinating Independent Variable, mentioned in a July 12, 2018 e-mail report by Fred Pescatore M.D. is BRAIN HUMMING.
Apparently, humming for 30 seconds or so, several times a day, stimulates the Vagus nerve that runs from your feet to your brain. In some folks, neurotransmitters in the brain are stimulated when you hum, reducing inflammation in the body, helping reduce the likelihood of getting Parkinson’s Disease & Dementia & various forms of Arthritis. And, if you already have Parkinson, Dementia or Arthritis, brain humming 3 or 4 times a day for 30-seconds or more, can lessen the symptoms.
Some arthritis patients, including Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, have seen a 70% reduction of symptoms over a 10 week period.
Since childhood, when I played the kazoo, I’ve found myself humming tunes, like “Oklahoma,” many times during the day. Perhaps, this humming has been a genetic Independent Variable protecting my brain from damage from both the environment & Father Time.

YOUR BRAIN & The Role of MITOCHONDRIA in Generating Much of Its Energy
The brain is the most energy dependent organ in the human body, consuming up to 20% of the energy used by the entire body.
Mitochondria are the powerhouses of your cells, producing most of the energy in your body, plus mitochondria can kill malfunctioning cells that might otherwise turn into cancer cells as you age. When you get older, mitochondria get less active in preventing cancer & produce much lower amounts of energy. MEAL TIMING One of the worst things you can do to damage your mitochondria is eating supper within 3 hours of going to bed, on a regular basis.(e.g. If you go to bed at 10 P.M., always finish your supper by 7 P.M.) By supplying your body with food within 3 hours of bedtime, when your body needs it the least (when you’re sleeping), excessive amounts of free radicals end up being formed, which damage mitochondrial DNA & create other health problems.in your body, like making you gain weight.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR MITOCHONDRIA
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) harm your mitochondria DNA, so minimize your exposure to EMF is these ways: Your cell phone emits EMFs. Minimize holding your cell phone or portable phone to your ear as much as possible. Sleep with it, & other wi-fi devices in your home, at least 6 feet from your brain. If EMF radiation exposure worries you (like it does me) consider getting a “radiation-blocking cell phone case” for about 50 bucks.
Avoid sleeping with your bed against a wall that has a power meter on the outside. The power meter is a major source of magnetic fields. Electric fields can be shielded but magnetic fields go right through metal, including lead. To protect your mitochondria, make it a habit of avoiding getting close to your home’s power meter for extended periods of time (e.g. 6 hours or more)

SLEEP Try to get 8-9 hours every night. Stay off the computer for at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. The blue light that digital screens emit can keep you awake.

YOUR BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER
The blood-brain barrier prevents large pollutant particles from damaging the brain. However small particles of magnetite, formed from iron oxide, can be inhaled into the brain through the nose. In 2008, high levels of magnetite in the brain were linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
Magnetite is very toxic & makes the brain protein linked to Alzheimer’s even more toxic.
WHERE DOES MAGNETITE COME FROM?

Rockefeller bought a large chunk of General Motors stock & together they forced the industry to convert 100% to use gasoline in internal combustion engines, so as to use Rockefeller’s oil rather than water.
Only around 25% of the fuel is used to power an internal combustion engine, which is very inefficient. The remaining 75% goes out the tail pipe as carbon monoxide, polluting the air with 2,000 toxic elements, like magnetite.
HELP! WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MYSELF?
Not much. The finest particle face masks won’t block magnetite, since the particles are too small. You can do only these three (3) things: 1. Keep lots of toxin-absorbing plants & micro-particle air filters around your workplace & home; 2. Live in a neighborhood away from power plants & thousands of motor vehicles, perhaps in the country, and: 3: Hope for the best.

Most of us realize that the automobile was designed by people who knew the anatomy of the human body. Each week or so in the future, I plan to talk about a body part (brain) or system (filtering system) comparing it to the design of a car.
The steering wheel, computer chips, gear shifts, cruise & foot controls are like the car’s brain. For example, to protect your car’s brains you adjust or replace brakes & other controls. You should do similar things to your body, to keep them from rust (brain fog) & other destructive elements (Alzheimer’s).
A fool runs his car into the ground, & never checks the oil, anti-freeze or other fluid levels, periodically. The same fool also seldom performs maintenance on his brain.
IN MY OPINION, TO PROTECT YOUR BRAIN YOU MUST KEEP IT WELL-HYDRATED WITH WATER!
Water hydration is essential. YOUR BRAIN SHRINKS EVERY TIME IT’S UNDER-HYDRATED. So every time your body signals that it’s thirsty (under-hydrated), your brain shrinks in size!
Once your brain shrinks, it NEVER can regain its previous size. If you keep under-hydrating your body, you are harming your poor brain, which will probably look like a walnut-sized prune when you are age 80, drooling in your wheelchair in an assisted-living facility.
QUESTION: “Why didn’t my doctor tell me this?”
ANSWER: “Most doctors are trained to manage disease, not to prevent it.” The typical doctor will usually treat your symptoms, not the disease.
If you are smart, drink water, even when you are not thirsty to prevent brain shrinkage.
Drink at least half your weight in ounces of water every day.
For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, drink 60-ounces of water every day. I use 20-ounce & 27-ounce water bottles to measure my 81-ounce daily intake. I begin my day about 7 A.M. daily with at least 20-ounces of water upon awakening to eliminate constipation from dehydration.
Drinking half your body weight in ounces of water, daily, prevents brain shrinkage & should be your #1 priority. (Remember that too much of anything can be bad. Keep your water intake to not much more than half your body weight in ounces.)
Of secondary importance, in my opinion, are these brain exercises that you see, from time-to-time printed or discussed in the media, shown below. These won’t help much if your brain has already shrunk to the size of a peanut!
Play mind-activity games like crossword puzzles like Dad did, read books, magazines, watch & listen to the news, quiz programs etc. Start a hobby, learn a new skill. Travel –learn about another country & language Get a part-time job, volunteer somewhere.
Attend events that stimulate your rain, like discussion groups, plays, lectures, debates, movies, concerts, reunions etc.
Tulsa, unfortunately, has fluoridated water, which 40% of the country avoids since they, & I agree, believe that fluoride is a poison, not a decay-preventer for children. Since 1990, I’ve had a reverse osmosis filtering system under my kitchen sink & a shower filter to filter out 99% of the fluoride, aluminum, mercury, chlorine etc. from my drinking water.
I use a Whirlpool WHER25 reverse osmosis unit from Lowe’s. It cost about $150 to buy, initially, & about $125 annually for the 3 replacement filters. I change the filters myself & drilled the 1-1/4” hole in my cast iron sink for the small reverse osmosis water faucet. TIP: Use a professional to install this system, like I did. My friend, Jeff, installed my 1stsystem in 1990 fothe End In the late 1950s I began taking B-complex tablets, which I attribute to the reason my I.Q. rose over 10% on a 3-hour I.Q test my employer, Western Electric, required every employee to take.
TIP: When your doctor tells you, “You get all the vitamins & minerals you need from your food,” reply with this statement.
“You would have been right, about 70 years ago, Doc. Since then, most of the minerals, like selenium, & some vitamins have nearly disappeared from the soil, especially in the eastern U.S.,from over-farming.” That’s the main reason you should take vitamin & mineral supplements, daily. . I also believe that my being a former endurance athlete from 1980 to 1996, trained me to over-hydrate weeks in advance for triathlons, half-marathons & 1 marathon, where the temperature at noon often reached 110 degrees f, which also kept my brain from shrinking too much.
Don’t expect coffee & tea to hydrate your body. Coffee & tea are more likely to leech the calcium from your bones than to hydrate you. Sodas are also bad for your body. We’ll discuss them, next week, when the subject will be your liver, the automobile-equivalent of your most important filter.
Your brain shrinks whenever you feel thirsty. So drink water regularly, keep track of your daily consumption & you will never have a lot of brain shrinkage. This is not rocket science!

THE #1 WORST FOOD THAT HARMS YOUR BRAIN (avoid it)
A 2012 UCLA study published in the “Journal of Physiology,” found that a diet high in fructose (a simple carbohydrate sugar compound found in both natural foods like fruit & made synthetically by food manufacturers, like high-fructose corn syrup), over time can severely-damage your memory & learning ability plus will pack on the weight & make you a candidate for type 2 diabetes, high blood triglycerides, extra small dense LDL (cholesterol) particles that cause plaque in your arteries & a coffin, prematurely, at your local funeral home.

Sugar rots out your teeth & destroys the brain. You’d do wise to eliminate all products with sugar & sugar substitutes from your diet. Remember that most packaged foods use sugar & salt for flavor & as preservatives. Even catsup is 15% sugar & white bread is about 10% sugar.
Hidden sugar & salt in sodas & food is a major reason that more than 35% of Americans are candidates for Weight Watchers. Sugar is also very addictive.
TOO MUCH SALT LIKELY AFFECTS YOUR BRAIN (makes you dumber)
A recent study from Weill Cornell Medical College, the medical school of Cornell University, shows that cognitive impairment is caused by too much dietary salt. In a test on mice, which have a similar digestive system as humans do, not only did the flow of blood to their brain decline, but mice failed to perform tests that they had aced before put on a high salt diet.
The American Heart Association states that the average American adult consumes more than 3,400 milligrams (mg) of salt per day, which is 30% more than the recommended 2,300 mg per day. A whooping 70% of their salt comes from prepared & packaged foods & restaurant meals. NOTE: Salt & sugar are preservatives, so, to get more shelf life in the supermarket, canned, prepared & packaged foods are loaded with both, which also adds inches to your waistline while it probably decreases your IQ. If you ever made a poor decision, like buying an annuity or a time share, don’t blame it on yourself. Blame it on the salt! Personally, although I’ve seldom added salt to my food, I’ve made plenty of bad decisions in my life. Learning by experience is a painful way to attain knowledge. If you’re smart, you’ll learn by the mistakes of others.
American children's I.Q.are currently 7 points lower than rhey were in the mid-1970s. I believe one reason for this to be the hundreds of new additives in a kid's diet, today, that weren't around in the mid-1970s.
Primary Cause of age-related Memory Loss is Brain Shrinkage
Starting about age 45, the average person loses about 3.8% o his/her brain size every year, according to an e-mail forwarded to me by Michael Cutler M.D. Jipes! That means that in slightly over 26 more years, when he’s about 71, the average person could lose his memory & have a brain the size of a few raisons. That’s scary!
I just turned age 87 a few months ago & have little long-term memory loss, & maybe a small short-term memory loss that I compensate for with daily written lists of planned activities. I attribute this young mind to two strategies I’ve followed for the past forty years:
I take natural vitamins & minerals daily & Vitamin B-Complex 50mg & sublingual Vitamin B-12 methyl-cobalamin 5mg with each meal along with omega fish oil, daily, to keep my homocysteine levels from getting dangerously high. Homocysteine is an amino acid. In 2018 there were 7.3 million complaints of Mexican bank fraud for about 1 billion dollars. according to Blooberg Businessweek.
A retired American dentist lost $400,000. Others lost their nest eggs & may end of getting back only 50 cents on the dollar, if even that.
So what, you may say?
Never forget that banking laws in Mexico are not as strick as they are in the USA & Switzerland. Apparently, regulations were lax enough for people, like hispanic Bernie Madoffs, to steal their bank accounts electronically.
